MY PHILOSOPHY
It is my goal not just to help my students solve the problems they are facing today but help them be better prepared for the problems they will face tomorrow. As adults, many of us do not remember the details of our studies in high school, but the problem solving strategies, love of learning, and life skills we learned have stuck with us and shaped our futures.
I was fortunate enough to be provided with an educational environment that allowed me to thrive. That being said, my middle school and high school years were not without their obstacles. I battled learning differences, which made reading, writing and memorization incredibly difficult for me. I was very lucky to have a support system, which not only provided me with all the resources imaginable but also allowed me to understand how I learned. This skill made all the difference in both my academic performance and my future. I work to develop this same skill in my students, allowing them to become lifelong learners and continue to thrive long after we've stopped working together.
MY BACKGROUND
As a University of Virginia graduate, with a degree in Mathematics, I have always loved numbers and science. After graduation I began my professional career as a business analyst for a bank, only to feel as though my creativity and problem solving skills were being continually stifled. I then spent time as a strategy consultant for a boutique management consulting company. While I enjoyed this experience, I still felt something was missing. I decided to pursue a masters degree in economics from Johns Hopkins University. Throughout, my master's program I tutored as I had done in undergrad. This allowed me to realize that my passion lies in solving problems, and teaching others to solve them. Suddenly my part-time income became a full-time career.
My background in problem solving allows me to work with each individual student to discover how he or she can most effectively learn and use skills to understand the required material. I also work with groups of teachers to help them develop curriculum, understand how to best teach test prep and help them better relate with students. Please feel free to reach out if you would like to talk about how I can help you, your son or daughter with specific academics, test prep or development of an education plan.
MY LOCATION
I’m currently located in Washington, DC. I work with many students and schools in the area. As circumstances require, I can also work with students over skype. I am also available to travel to work with schools or groups of teachers outside of the DC metro area.
MY PERSONAL LIFE
Lastly, many of my students appreciate knowing that I’m a real person too. When I’m not working, I can be found talking enthusiastically about my next big adventure (like a camping trip in Africa), insisting that someone must check out this new band, book or podcast, and stepping on my own feet in various dance classes.
